The Rangers have released 33-year old righty reliever Geoff Geary. Geary pitched in 23 games (6 starts) in AAA-ball this year and he was 4-5 with a 5.37 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP. He gave up a stunning 83 hits in only 58 2/3 innings this season in the minors! The Rangers have so many good, young arms that it seemed like a waste of time keeping Geary around. This will allow him to try to find another job this year giving him a better chance to make it back to the majors.

29-year old lefty reliever Clay Rapada has been lights out in AAA-ball for the Rangers this year. Rapada has pitched in 35 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year and he is 1-0 with 2 saves, a 1.67 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP. He has only given up 26 hits this year in 43 innings pitched while whiffing 41 batters in the minors showing that he’s razor sharp right now. If the Rangers need another lefty in the pen look for them to give Rapada a chance.

Martin Perez is having a rough time so far this season in the minors for the Texas Rangers

19-year old lefty starting pitcher Martin Perez came into this season as the Rangers’ #3 rated prospect according to Baseball America. He has started 14 games in AA-ball so far this season and he is 3-4 with a 5.19 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. Perez has whiffed 63 batters in 59 innings this season but he has also walked 34 batters and that is way too many. Perez has now pitched in 56 games (48 starts) in his three years in the minors and he is 10-14 with 1 save, a 3.67 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. The Rangers really like Perez but they could use him as a trade chip this month to get whatever they think they will need to win the A.L. West.

Chris Davis is getting back on track in AAA for the Texas Rangers

Blogged under General, Front Page, The Minors, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Friday 4 June 2010 at 3:55 pm

24-year old lefty swinging 1B Chris Davis is getting back on track in AAA for the Rangers. He has played in 35 games in AAA this year and he is 41 of 140 (.293 avg, .828 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 5 homers and 29 RBIs. With Justin Smoak struggling with the Rangers in his first taste of the majors Davis could get called back up soon. Davis played in 15 games earlier this year for the Rangers and he was 9 for 48 (.188 avg, .556 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. The worst part about Davis earlier this year was his whiffing (17 times) which happens way too often. Still, if Davis is hitting a lot of bombs the Rangers would put up with the whiffs.

Tanner Scheppers is on the fast track to joining the Texas Rangers

23-year old righty reliever/starter Tanner Scheppers is on the fast track to Arlington. He came into this season as the Rangers’ #4 prospect according to Baseball America and he’s showing why in the minors. He has pitched in 9 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball this season and he is 0-0 with 3 saves, a 1.06 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP. He only gave up 8 hits in 17 innings this season while whiffing 28 batters showing just how nasty he has been. He has pitched in 13 games (4 starts) in his two years in the minors and he is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Scheppers is a great looking pitcher who could probably help the Rangers right now if they gave him a call but he will probably have to wait until later in the year.
