The Rangers took a $3 million dollar gamble on 32-year old righty starting pitcher Brandon Webb and all they got for their money was four starts in AA-ball. Webb will undergo righty shoulder surgery next week which will end his 2011 season. Webb pitched in 4 games (all starts) in AA-ball for the Rangers this year and he was 0-2 with a 9.75 ERA and a 2.25 WHIP. Webb has pitched in 199 games (198 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 87-62 with a 3.27 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. The Rangers were naive to think that Webb was going to give them a productive year in 2011.

24-year old righty reliever/starter Tanner Scheppers came into this season as the Rangers’ #3 rated prospect according to Baseball America. But, he has only pitched in 1 game (1 start) in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 13.50 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP. He is on the minor league D.L. with a back injury. Scheppers has now pitched in 41 games (12 starts) in his first three years in the minors and he is 2-4 with 6 saves, a 4.72 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. He has whiffed 113 batters in his first 101 innings in the minors but he has also given up 106 hits and he’s walked 41 batters. The Rangers were hoping that Scheppers might be ready to help them at some point in 2011, but, those plans are likely on hold for now.
