The Texas Rangers have six free agents heading into the winter. Here is who I see staying and leaving out of this bunch:

Matt Treanor: 35-year old righty swinging catcher Matt Treanor played in 7 games for the Rangers last year and he was 0 for 10 (.000 avg, .083 OPS) with 1 RBI. He played in 72 games overall last year with the Rangers & Royals and he was 42 for 196 (.214 avg, .628 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 3 homers, 22 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. PREDICTION: LEAVING

Brandon Webb: 32-year old righty starting pitcher never made it to the mound with Rangers in 2011. He did pitch in 4 games (all starts) in AA-ball last year and he was 0-2 with a 9.75 ERA and a 2.25 WHIP. PREDICTION: LEAVING

C.J. Wilson: 30-year old lefty starting pitcher C.J. Wilson was outstanding in 2011. He pitched in 34 games (all starts) for the Rangers last year and he was 16-7 with a 2.94 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. The Rangers aren’t going to get in a bidding war for Wilson. PREDICTION: LEAVING

Yoshinori Tateyama: 35-year old righty reliever Yoshinori Tateyama pitched in 39 games (0 starts) for the Rangers as a rookie last year and he was 2-0 with 1 save, a 4.50 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. The Rangers have a club option for 2012 for Tateyama worth $1 million bucks. PREDICTION: LEAVING

Darren Oliver: 41-year old lefty reliever Darren Oliver was outstanding in 2011 for the Rangers. Oliver pitched in 61 games (0 starts) for the Rangers last year and he was 5-5 with 2 saves, a 2.29 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. PREDICTION: STAYING

Mike Gonzalez: 33-year old lefty reliever Mike Gonzalez pitched in 7 games (0 starts) for the Rangers last year and he was 0-0 with a 5.14 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Gonzalez pitched in 56 games (0 starts) for the Rangers & Orioles and he was 2-2 with 1 save, a 4.39 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. PREDICTION: LEAVING

The Texas Rangers had a very solid 2011 season despite losing the World Series

Blogged under General, Season Reviews, Front Page, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Friday 28 October 2011 at 11:02 pm

The Texas Rangers lost the World Series, 4-3 to the Cardinals, but they still had a solid year. They beat the Tampa Bay Rays and Detroit Tigers to get to the World Series. They won the A.L. West with a 96-66 record, which had them 10 games ahead of the Angels as they really pulled away from them in September. Here are the things that really stood out to me about the Rangers in the 2011 regular season:

TEAM MVP - The Rangers almost got rid of 35-year old righty swinging DH Michael Young last winter. They are lucky they came to their senses as Young was the best hitter on the team in 2011. Young played in 159 games for the Rangers last year and he was 213 for 631 (.338 avg, .854 OPS) with 88 runs scored, 11 homers, 106 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. He proved in 2011, that he has plenty left in the gas tank.

BEST PITCHER - 30-year old lefty starting pitcher C.J. Wilson was even better in 2011 than he was in 2010. Wilson pitched in 34 games (all starts) for the Rangers this year and he was 16-7 with a 2.94 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He only gave up 191 hits in 223 1/3 innings this year while whiffing 206 batters and walking 74, as he was impressive.

PLEASANT SURPRISE: The fact that 25-year old lefty Derek Holland and 26-year old lefty Matt Harrison started pitching up to their abilities. Holland pitched in 32 games (all starts) and he was 16-5 with a 3.95 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Harrison pitched in 31 games (30 starts) for the Rangers this year and he was 14-9 with a 3.39 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. The best is yet to come from these two guys.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT: The Rangers dealt Tommy Hunter and Chris Davis to the Orioles in return for 36-year old righty reliever Koji Uehara. Uehara pitched in 22 games (0 starts) for the Rangers this year and he was 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP. He was so awful in the playoffs that he was left off of the World Series’ roster.

World Series Game #7: St. Louis Cardinals 6, Texas Rangers 2

The Rangers scored two runs in the top of the 1st inning but that was all they could muster in this game. Ian Kinsler was 2 for 3 with 1 walk in this game. Josh Hamilton went 1 for 4 with 1 run scored, a double and 1 RBI despite not moving too well due to a groin injury. Michael Young was 1 for 4 with a double and a RBI. Mike Napoli (1 for 4) and David Murphy (1 for 4 with a double) were the rest of the offense for the Rangers in this game as they had a hard time with Chris Carpenter and the rest of the Cardinals’ pitchers. Matt Harrison got the start and it was a rough one for him. He pitched the first four innings in which he gave up 5 hits and 3 runs (all earned) while walking 2 batters and whiffing 1. Scott Feldman was terrible in this game as he only got two guys out while walking 3 batters and allowing 2 runs (both of which were earned). C.J. Wilson pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings and he whiffed 2 batters as he was solid. Mike Adams had another rough game as he worked 2/3 of an inning in which he gave up 2 hits, 1 run (it was earned), while walking and whiffing 1 batter. Mike Gonzalez worked a solid inning in which he got all three batters out that he faced (he whiffed two of them). Alexi Ogando struck out the only batter he faced last night. The Rangers season has ended with a thud once again, as they have lost the World Series, 4 games to 3.

The Texas Rangers have a quartet of hitters that are swinging good bats in the World Series

Mike Napoli, Adrian Beltre, Ian Kinsler and Elvis Andrus are hitting the ball well in the World Series and the Rangers need them to keep up the good work tonight. Napoli has been pretty darn awesome in this series as he has played in 6 games in which he is 6 for 16 (.375 avg, 1.313 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 2 homers and 10 RBIs. Adrian Beltre is also swinging a red hot stick as he has played in all six games for the Rangers in which he is 9 for 27 (.333 avg, .963 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 2 homers and 3 RBIs. Ian Kinsler is only 1 for three stealing bases but he is still 7 for 22 (.318 avg, .828 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs in the first six games. Elvis Andrus has also given the Rangers a spark at the top of the order as he is 8 for 27 (.296 avg, .630 OPS) with 4 runs scored. The Rangers need to get to Chris Carpenter early tonight if they are going to win the World Series.

It’s a winner take all Game #7 in the World Series tonight!

The Cardinals are on a roll right now after winning an improbable game last night. The Rangers can’t let the disappointment from last night’s loss trickle into tonight’s game. The Rangers are going to start young lefty Matt Harrison against crafty righty Chris Carpenter of the Cardinals. Harrison has pitched in 1 game (1 start) for the Rangers so far in the World Series and he is 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA and a 1.91 WHIP. Harrison has now pitched in 4 games (3 starts) so far in the post-season and he is 1-1 with a 5.02 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. The Rangers need Harrison to pitch like he did during the regular season as the Cardinals have a very impressive offense. Chris Carpenter of the Cardinals has already pitched in 2 games (both starts) in the World Series already and he is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. He has now pitched in 5 games (all starts) in the post-season for the Cardinals and he is 3-0 with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.
